‘If Doyle wants you to write something more popular than your regular fare then perhaps you should consider doing so,’ said my fellow-lodger one evening over brandies and a warm fire.
‘I’m not a writer, I am a biographer,’ I replied. ‘There is quite a difference.’
‘Your pocketbook—‘
‘—would be no better off if I attempted poorly-written lycanthropy, vampirism, or ghost stories.’
‘Watson, your writing would be extraordinary, as in the past, no matter the genre.’
‘You are too kind, but deluded. The only work of sensational fiction I ever wrote was “The Adventure of the Empty House”’.
