Sherlock Holmes and I were summoned to Scotland Yard to hear the testimony of Mr Harlon Blandforth, a suspect in the disappearance of his employer’s young daughter.

‘I accompanied the child and her nanny to Brighton’ said Blandforth. ‘They were making sandcastles on the beach and I went to get sandwiches for our luncheon. They were gone when I returned. I assumed Miss Danby had taken the child—‘

‘—Miss Danby’s body was found this morning,’ said Inspector Lestrade.

‘Enough! Lock him up and charge him with murder,’ said Holmes. ‘Brighton has a pebble beach. Nobody makes sandcastles there.’
