Sherlock Holmes only referred to the most interesting puzzles as ‘piquant’ and thus was the case with Mr Neville St. Clair who had disappeared near a notorious opium den.

Inspector Bradstreet’s main suspect, the Lascar, took flight leaving behind a potential accomplice, a raggedy man named Boone.

Tempering my native candour with suspicion, I remarked to the beggar-man, ‘You have many layers of clothing. Don’t you mind the heat?’

‘Easier to carry 'em,’ he replied.

‘This questioning is useless,’ muttered Bradstreet.

‘Don’t worry, Inspector,’ said Holmes, brandishing a wet sponge like a weapon. ‘It'll all come out in the wash.’

Oooh, a nice nod to Canon with this one! And a very literal use of the final phrase.
