Major Watson surveyed the aftermath of yet another night of surgery. The casualties had been finally removed from the operating theatre and his staff slumped anywhere they could.

Leaning over the wounded for countless hours had eroded any resolve the Major once had; so much agony and helplessness.

Aching in body and spirit, he moved amongst his exhausted staff, rousing and urging them to go to bed.

Outside, there was light in the east and he wept for the beauty of it. Surely the new day would be better than the last.

Then he heard the sound of approaching ambulances.
