My fellow-lodger, Mr Sherlock Holmes, and I did not share the same cultural inclinations. He was not at all interested in the stochastic study of chance, and I had difficulty appreciating high culture. He claimed that I was a Philistine. I called him a toff. Nevertheless, he observed me at cards and I accompanied him to the opera.
‘I didn’t understand a word of this one,’ I complained to him after the finale.
‘But did you not find the use of the tympani and lighting creatively applied?’ he asked.
‘I found the thunderbolts and lightning very, very frightening.’ I agreed.
