‘Yes, Mr Holmes, it would be possible for someone remain hidden here, but what a grim undertaking it would be! The River Fleet had been a sewer long before my reconstructions.’
‘That is certainly true. This is a missing-persons case, not a manhunt. Our victim would not be here voluntarily.’
‘Good Lord! Does Scotland Yard believe someone is alive down here?’
‘No, but I‘m willing to consider it. Once the impossible has been eliminated… and all that.’
‘Well, although the outlets have been barricaded, there are other egresses I can show you. ’
‘Sir Joseph, your expertise is invaluable.’
