It was difficult to see my former fellow-lodger slow with age. When we first met his energy knew no bounds whereas I endured a slow and precarious recovery from wartime misfortunes.

First, his raven hair receded and then arthritis stole his violin. He refused to wear the spectacles I prescribed. Watching him squint through his magnifying lens wounded my oculists’ pride.

Over time our positions reversed: I managed to retain my health whilst my friend’s blithe disregard to his diet, sleep, and regrettable habits had taken its toll.

So it was a relief of sorts when he announced his retirement.

I love Watson here; it’s interesting to see how his attitude towards aging has been affected by his experience with infirmity earlier in life.

I also must take a moment to show my appreciation for the Indiana Jones quote that is your title. It has been a favorite quote of mine for years.

It's one of my favourite Indy quotes too. That and the one about always being snakes.
