I do not know what woke me but I remembered the old childhood prayer: ‘From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties and things that go bump in the night, Good Lord deliver us.’

I had woke to something bumping around downstairs. Using as much stealth as I could muster, I crept down to our sitting room. Another bump emanated further downstairs.

Bursting into the kitchen, I caught Sherlock Holmes with cream and crumbs on his hands and face.

‘Holmes! What are you eating?’

He replied, haughtily.

‘It is, of course, a trifle, but there is nothing so important as trifles.’
