It was a paradoxical situation.

My leg injury from Maiwand was initially not serious and my recovery should have been routine.

However, my shoulder wound precluded using crutches and thereby delayed my return to ambulation.

Even so, I was making slow but steady progress when typhoid fever struck leaving me quite invalided.

Finally ensconced in London, and running low on funds and resolve, I became reluctant to leave my hotel.

‘Dash it all!’ I cursed my mirror. Either escape this room or prepare to die in it. Coffee was a strong incentive; good coffee like that from the Criterion Bar.
