Inspector Athelney Jones sat in The Ten Bells ringed by an audience of junior constables.

‘I’ll not deny that Mr Homes is clever, but sometimes he cannot see a dangerous situation until he’s stumbled deep into it. Take that time when he engaged the smugglers at Rotherhithe Wharf. If I hadn’t shown up when I did, he’d have been shot and Dr Watson would have drowned.

‘Holmes, how can you tolerate that rubbish Jones is spouting?’ asked Watson from their darkened corner.

‘Ah, Watson, let him have his fun. Despite all his puffery, he did pull you from the Thames.’

Athelney Jones is a buffoon and makes such a tempting target for me to write. Having Holmes let him drone on shows how much he cares for Watson.
