‘Oh bother,’ exclaimed Sherlock Holmes as the train rolled to a stop in the tunnel. Daytime trains have no interior lights so the darkness was palpable. Holmes opened the window and dank, humid air flowed in.
As time crept by, the retired detective became increasingly aware of Watson’s irregular breathing.’
‘Steady on, old chap. The porter says we will be on our way soon.’
‘I’m fine. I’m fine. I’m fine,’ Watson repeated.
Eventually the train shuffled to life. Back in the light of day Holmes looked at his ashen comrade. ‘Watson, what is the matter?’
‘It smelled of the trenches.’
