Although he never questions me, Sherlock Holmes knows me well and can read when my unfortunate brother comes to mind. That particular wound has never healed but I owed my friend the story.

‘You see, he fell in with bad company at school and was sent down. He defaulted on the funds put aside for his Army commission. He betrayed me and I used our inheritance to study medicine.

‘He was my idol. I always thought we would reconcile, but we were utterly estranged, and he drank himself to death.’

‘And you feel guilty?’

‘No. I still cannot forgive him.’
