‘Mr Holmes, surely you don’t believe that everybody has unique finger marks?’ exclaimed Inspector Gregson. ‘Even if that were possible, how could an institution even as great as Scotland Yard have the capacity to collect and catalogue such minutia?’

‘I’m not suggesting you collect prints from everybody, only that you could use them to discriminate between the guilty and the innocent.’

‘I'm sorry, but your fanciful theories are not practical, and they never will be.’

Thus dismissed, Holmes and I stood and took our leave.

‘Cheer up,’ I murmured. ‘Things that seem impossible today may be commonplace in the future.’

Give it a few years, Holmes. You'll see your vindication.

The scene I want to see is the final step in anything new: a young constable in the mid-1920s very patronisingly telling this old duffer ("some old friend of the Governor") about fingerprinting like HE invented it.
