Sherlock Holmes enjoyed observing the audience even more than the performance so we often would arrive to the opera early.

‘Do you recognise the gentleman in the third box?’ Holmes asked with a slight nod in that direction.

I took a sidelong glance. The man in question was likely in his late forties and was fashionably dressed. He sat alone.

‘No, I don’t know him. Should I?’ I asked.

‘His name is James Moriarty and by the light of day he is a professor of mathematics. But behind that banal mask, he is a mastermind, a veritable Napoleon of Crime.’
