Roy rose, stretched his long shambly wolfhound body, then lay back down to observe his master and his friends as they engaged in a game of sketch-charades.
Dr Watson drew several squiggles on the slate chalkboard.
Swamp adder, snorted Roy. It was always swamp adders.
Mr Holmes eventually recognised it, so it was now his turn. He drew a circle.
Roy tilted his head. Ah, the Black Pearl of the Borgias. How typical.
This one went unsolved so Stanley Hopkins went next and sketched a very realistic oil lamp.
Roy woofled at his master. Surely you recognise the Devil’s Foot!?!

Supplementary Notes:
Animal: The swamp adder and, of course, our POV narrator: Roy the wolfhound.
Vegetable: The Devil's Foot root
Mineral: No, it's not the pearl, its the chalkboard! (Pearls are organically-formed.)
In my head-canon, after The Adventure of the Creeping Man, Professor Presbury's wolfhound, Roy, is adopted by Dr Watson who remains in London after Holmes retires to Sussex.

Date: 2023-07-23 03:05 am (UTC)"Pearls are deposits of calcium carbonate (aragonite, calcite, or both) called nacre. Pearl (nacre) is not a mineral because it does not have a distinctive crystal structure and because it is formed by the action of a living organism."
But I am not a geologist; I am a hack fanfic writer and as surely as swamp adders crave the occasional saucer of milk, pearls can be minerals if it suits the plot!
Thanks!
