There they were, stumbling in through the front door well after midnight. At first Mrs Hudson thought her new lodgers were drunk but the sounds were all wrong. The young doctor stifled a groan and the chemistry student swore beneath his breath.
She adjusted the gas and by the new illumination she saw that both had been beaten bloody.
‘Brawling, Mr Holmes? I thought you were supposed to be intelligent!’
‘Not exactly, Mrs Hudson; not brawling per se. It was an experiment in urban combat,’ slurred Dr Watson.
She turned on him ‘And I thought you were the responsible one!’
