‘Happy Blackheath Day, Watson!’ three men exclaimed as they burst through the door, startling the inhabitants.
Watson’s astonishment turned to delight with the recognition of his old rugby mates.
‘We heard you were back in London! We’re taking you to the pub tonight and you’re not returning sober!’
‘Today we commemorate our club’s victory against the Welsh National side…’
‘ …And the subsequent brawl!’
‘He may not have started it, but Johnny certainly ended it!’
‘‘Tis more of a celebration than a holiday,’ one confided.
‘Clearly,’ Holmes replied as they pulled Watson from his armchair and marched him out the door.

I love how you are able to express so much in so few words! This is a marvelous drabble! (would it be greedy to ask for more about the aftermath?)

Date: 2011-07-06 03:44 pm (UTC)Blackheath was a respectable Rugby club in Watson's time. The Welsh National team was to play England later in the month and organised a 'friendly match' to stay in training for the big match. At that time, Watson was playing for Blackheath while studying at the University of London.
In what should have been an easy victory for the Welsh, Blackheath managed to hold their own and indeed had earned a narrow lead toward the end of the game. Due to a couple of poor sports on the Welsh side, play became unnecessarily rough with intentional injuries. Blackheath maintained their lead to the end of the game and a brawl began at the final whistle.
Watson brawled just as hard as any other that day, and although many injuries were sustained, there could be no denying that Blackheath had also won the brawl. The Welsh side was in no condition to take on the English National team and had to return home.
(None of this is at all based on fact, historical or otherwise!)
