April 15, 1917
Field Hospital 15
France (location classified)

‘It’s coffee, Sir. You look like you could use some.’

Major Watson looked suspiciously at the battered enamel cup.  Had they not run out of rations days ago?  Over-worked and under-supplied, his staff were doing their best to keep their field hospital functioning.  Waves of injured and dying flooded in from the latest offensive.

Everyone was pushed beyond their capacities. Morale was abysmal. Cold and damp made matters so much worse.

Watson blew away the steam and took a tentative sip.

‘Thank you, Corporal. This is the best coffee I’ve ever tasted.’

The soldier beamed at his commander’s obvious lie.

.oOOo.

I know! The shmoop!
But what can you do with such an obvious prompt?

:-)

Is it wrong that my first reaction was to think of Baldrick coffee?

Thanks!
Is Baldrick coffee as bad is that in this fic?
(I have been avoiding Blackadder Goes Fourth... I have been warned about the ANGST and have been told how brilliant it is, but I will have to find the right time to view it.)

IT'S WORSE.

And let me add my recommendation. Blackadder Goes Forth is, in my opinion, a prime example of how a farcically funny thing can make a turn to something sad and serious and do it in line with the work as a whole, but not in bad taste (the way the Mitchell and Webb Holmes thing is in bad taste, to my mind.)

Do bring tissues, though.

Oh, very good. If Watson is as wrung out as he seems, it's possible he's not even lying.

It's possible that it is a very welcome cup of coffee, but it is definitely a dreadful cup of coffee. Watson was never a convincing liar!

Aw! Even when morale is at its lowest, Watson still inspires loyalty (and that protective instinct) in his men... <3

The Major inspires fierce loyalty and trust with even the simplest of gestures. (That's what makes him such a whump-magnet!)

I bet he wished he was a more convincing liar, but the effort was appreciated. Thanks for commenting!
