Transitional Home for Veterans
Southampton
November 6, 1880

Unable to perform these actions for himself, the young officer grimly endured his morning shave and ablutions.  His necessarily bland diet failed to tempt his appetite.  Strengthening exercises left him hurting and fatigued.  The pitying looks from the other patients and the intolerable cheeriness of his carers was becoming increasingly harder to face.

Mistaking his need for solitude as piety, they wheeled him into the chapel.  He vowed, as soon as he could manage it, he would seek his place among the Empire’s loungers and idlers.  Surely, even the worst day in London would be better than another day here.

*offers your Watson tea and nerf-bat* I'm sure he won't mind the anacronism once he realises how useful a nerf-bat can be.

Owie! No, I don't think our mod loves Watson anymore at all, not even a little bit. Nice use of the prompt, though.

Greener pastures, eh... ? Good luck in London, Watson!

Sadly, he wouldn't want you to. He doesn't want anyone's pity.
(But he really needs a snuggle!)

What is a nerf-bat? Sorry for my ignorance. I lead a sheltered life.
(But thanks for the tea!)

Thanks! I keep trying to think of ways to use the prompt that others will not have done... and then squish it into 100 words. Ugh!

Poor Watson was not quite ready for civilian life when he was deposited on the Portsmouth pier. The Orontes faced stormy seas on the voyage to Britain and Watson was never much of a sailor. He worked hard to regain his health so he could relocate to London where he could be just another face in the crowd. As he was trying to get his life back on track, he met a very eccentric individual... Mr Sherlock Holmes, and the rest is history.
(Well, it's all fiction, but there you have it!)

Yes. Well, my angst muse took the call this time.
Thanks for commenting!

A nerf-bat is just a foam bat. But since I'm a child of the '70s when Nerf products were all the rage, "foam bat" is just too generic for me. Suffice to say, you can let out a lot of anger and frustration with very little damage when you're weilding a nerf-bat. ;-)

Thanks for clearing that up! Watson could certainly use a nerf-bat, especially once he moves to Baker Street!
