Field Hospital 15
March 17 1916
There was little warning. Just an increasing dribble of water, then the whole ceiling came down. Major Watson was still awake at the time of the collapse and barely managed to duck under his makeshift desk.
‘Halloa! Halloa! Can anybody hear me?’ Watson called into the small air pocket the desk had afforded.
The wood creaked as the weight of the earth pressed down. Watson braced himself and strained to keep his poor shelter intact. He shouted again. Surely, someone had noticed the cave-in and help was on the way. They had better be; he was running out of air.

Date: 2011-07-29 05:26 am (UTC)You have read of the trenches they're excavating now in a French field, from WWI, where they think the remains of 45 or so soldiers have been entombed ever since the tunnel collapsed in 1916-1917...
