Sherlock Holmes had foretold that continental war would be catastrophic. An east wind, he called it, comparing it to the gales that wreak havoc upon our fair shores. I understood his metaphor. The Prussians had been agitating for some time and England would not be spared. Holmes also predicted that the good ship Britannia would weather this maelstrom and, although at great cost, she would be better and stronger for it.

Out here, in the whirling vortices, his prophecy that our land will emerge intact and at peace, has become the one beacon that guides me through the raging storm.

I tried so hard to not have the lighthouse become a metaphor for either one of the characters.
It was the prophecy of eventual peace which Watson uses as his beacon.
