That song. That terrible song! It brought back such horror. Of being helpless, pinned down and forced to listen while the arch-fiend maimed and tortured his truest friend.
John Watson tore the wax disk from the phonograph.
‘John, you’re scaring me—’ Mary had never seen him like this.
‘Where did you get this?’ he demanded.
‘It was among our wedding gifts. There was no card.’
Mary eased the recording from his trembling hands. Her husband was himself again.
‘What does it mean?’ she asked.
‘It means that despite of what Holmes did for us, we are still not safe.’
