The Old Bailey's magistrate had pronounced the death sentence when a robed figure appeared beside Inspector Lestrade.

‘Are you here for me?’

The Grim fellow’s gaze fell upon two observers in the public gallery.

‘Not Mr Holmes!’

NO

‘Dr Watson, then?’

IS IT JULY?

‘No, December.’ [1]

I AM HERE FOR THE ACCUSED. HE IS INNOCENT, BY THE WAY.

‘That’s what they all say.’

WHAT IF IT IS TRUE?

‘Then it’s God’s will, right?’

IF THAT ALLOWS YOU TO SLEEP AT NIGHT.

Lestrade woke in a sweat.

I think you pay him a great homage with this piece. It's so clever and funny and yet it makes us think... how many innocent men have been punished... and how can Lestrade (among others) live with it?
