In the year 1878 I left Edinburgh to take my degree of Doctor of Medicine of the University of London, and whilst I planned to proceed to Netley to go through the course prescribed for army surgeons, I intended to make the most of this great city in the meantime.

In the year 1878 I found myself once again rusticated from a prestigious university. It was Oxford two years ago, and now it was Cambridge. Despite what my brother thinks, my pursuits are educational but not necessarily academic. London's vast libraries have so much to offer the autodidact.
